August 2024 Social Media Holidays & Observances

The dog days of summer are in full swing but do you think the heat makes us too languid to put together an August 2024 social media holidays and observances calendar? Think again! Not only have we compiled a calendar of dynamite days for your business to commemorate on social media in August, but we’ve also added context and helpful links to help guide your post strategy. August is a pretty action-packed month so with this calendar of holidays and observances, your social media posts won’t just sing, they’ll belt out an aria!

Monthly Social Media Observances in August

National Traffic Safety Month
Summer is the most dangerous time of year for traffic accidents so use this month as an opportunity to drive awareness of some of the statistics and to promote safety tips like this list from the NHTSA. #TrafficSafetyMonth

Back to School Month
There’s no such thing as an endless summer (although writing these calendars sure makes it feel that way for your intrepid author) and now it’s time for the kids to go back to school. Brands should promote any back-to-school savings and also use this opportunity to express appreciation for teachers! #BackToSchool

National Wellness Month
Do you provide products or services that promote self-care? Well by golly, you’ve got a whole month of context to talk about what you do while operating under the umbrella of National Wellness Month. Given that wellness is practically a movement at this point, it makes sense to offer tips, discounts, and advice while also making it a point to spotlight some of your customers and vendors who subscribe to the same (tranquil!) mindset you do! #NationalWellnessMonth

Black Business Month
Did you know that 10% of all American businesses are black-owned? This is the month to celebrate your black business and all that it does to make your community thrive. Celebrate those who came before and take this month to deservedly champion your fellow black business owners! Here’s a great list of ways to celebrate an important month! #BlackBusinessMonth

National Golf Month
We swore we wouldn’t do this but if your business is even tangentially involved with golf then this month should be a…wait for it…hole in one for posting on social media! If you offer golf gear then this is a great month to offer special discounts. If your business has nothing to do with golf but you have employees that enjoy the game then you can have a little fun with this month and post photos of those employees on the links in their goofiest golf outfits. We’re talking plaid pants and Payne Stewart hats here, everybody. The fine folks at Golf Ball Planet have provided a veritable galaxy worth of ideas to celebrate that you can find here. #NationalGolfMonth

National Sandwich Month
Is there anything better than the sandwich? We submit that there is not. Restaurants can take this month to highlight the best sandwiches on their menu while offering discounts and potentially offering special sandwiches for a limited time. Your sandwich artists don’t need to cut off an ear to make this a great month but make sure your food photography is especially on point this month! #NationalSandwichMonth

August 2024 Social Media Holidays

AUG 01

Startup Day Across America
It takes a tremendous leap of faith to start a business and build it from the ground floor. Startup culture (for better or worse) has become synonymous with entrepreneurship so today is a great day for startup founders to both discuss their origin story and highlight the employees helping build their business on social media! #StartupDay

National Girlfriend Day
While this day was ostensibly started to appreciate the girlfriends of the world in a romantic way, businesses can also flip the holiday on its head and use it to celebrate female friendships. Either way, offering a discount on gifts for the special women in your customers’ lives is always a good idea today! You can also go the guilt route with this day and imply that the girlfriends of your audience members are unappreciated and therefore deserve a gift you happen to sell. While we don’t necessarily condone this practice, it seems to work for other businesses and hey, it’s never a bad idea to buy your girlfriend a gift just because! #NationalGirlfriendDay

AUG 02

International Beer Day
Raise a toast to the finest beers on your menu and offer discounts throughout the day. This is a day you might want to even count down to on your social feeds (The International Beer Day website is currently doing this now and I’m writing this July 12th) to ensure that you get a ton of traffic from the beer-swilling masses. Just make sure those kegs are tapped, the bar is stocked, and you’re ready for the deluge! #IntlBeerDay

AUG 03

Clean Your Floors Day
If my wife is to be believed then I have not ever celebrated this day in ten years of marriage. Businesses should highlight some of their best cleaning products today and consider offering tips to floor-cleaning luddites like myself. Here’s a great list from Molly Maid that I will definitely reference the next time I clean my floors. #CleanYourFloorsDay

AUG 04

National Sisters Day
The relationship between sisters is truly special so if you have sisters working on your team then you should highlight their bond on social media today! #NationalSistersDay

American Family Day
Family is the most important thing and today should be used by brands to highlight products or experiences that bring families together. Consider offering a family discount today and be sure to show visuals of families in your social media posts today! #AmericanFamilyDay

National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day
Fish meet barrel for social media posts. With the exception of dogs and those with allergies, pretty much everyone loves chocolate chip cookies so consider offering discounts, free cookies, or even the best chocolate chip recipes from your team! This recipe from Joy Food Sunshine (they’re not a cult despite the name, we checked) promises “the best chocolate chip cookie recipe ever” (the hubris!) and serves as a great example of a way to position any recipe you share. #NationalChocolateChipCookieDay

AUG 05

National Oyster Day
Oysters are in season and often serve as an indicator that a dining experience is a special occasion. Restaurants can use this day to talk about their freshest oysters while also making subtle inferences that a generous allotment of oysters will make for a great, amorous date night. Keep it tongue in cheek but you can probably have a lot of fun with the mistaken assumption that oysters are a natural aphrodisiac. #NationalOysterDay

AUG 06

National Farmworker Appreciation Day
While this is an obvious day to celebrate if you work on a farm, it’s also a day that restaurants can utilize to show appreciation for the fresh food farmers bring to their tables every day. Here’s a complete guide for how brands and businesses can show their appreciation for farmers on this day. #FarmworkerAppreciationDay

AUG 07

Purple Heart Day
Today is a day to express appreciation for anyone involved with your business who was wounded in service of their country. It’s a day for businesses to project reverence and appreciation and can serve as a springboard for broader conversations about an appreciation for the sacrifices of American servicemen and women. #PurpleHeartDay

AUG 08

International Cat Day
You’d think every day was International Cat Day the way felines parade around the house like they own the place. Cats and dogs are always a sure thing on social media so show photos of your team with their cats today! #InternationalCatDay

AUG 09

National Book Lovers Day
Don’t let Barnes and Noble or Amazon have all the fun today! People LOVE exchanging book recommendations so consider sharing your teams’ favorite books today or describe a book that has helped your business along over the years! #NationalBookLoversDay

AUG 10

National Lazy Day
While laziness might evoke a bit of a negative connotation, we still live in a society where people are overworked and exhausted. Businesses can use today to promote services or products that help people relax and take a break because hey, they’ve earned it! If your business offers a fun experience, then encourage people to blow off work and drop by. #NationalLazyDay

AUG 11

National Son and Daughter Day
Today is a day for people to spoil their sons and daughters and as someone with twins (boy and girl) at home, you better believe I’m going to do something even if they won’t remember it given their age. There are a lot of options for businesses to seize this day whether it’s offering family discounts, posting photos of your team with their sons and daughters, or offering suggestions like this list from CBS News (Edward R. Murrow probably didn’t celebrate this day) on how parents can spend the day! #SonandDaughterDay

AUG 12

Milkman Day
We’re going to level with you, the twelfth of August is kind of slow and we thought it was hilarious that Milkman Day falls the day after National Son and Daughter Day. It would be objectively hysterical if private investigators offered a discount on this day so you’re welcome, Dick Tracy. #MilkmanDay

AUG 13

National Filet Mignon Day
There are few things tastier than a perfectly prepared cut of filet mignon. Restaurants should offer discounts today and share content that shows their best filet mignons being prepared! Self-appointed King of The Emoji and Nuera president, Joe Sampson would insist we use this emoji for any restaurant client: 🥩 #NationalFiletMignonDay

AUG 14

National Financial Awareness Day
This is a day we will definitely be posting about for our clients at Riverplace Capital. This is a day where any business that deals in finance should offer tips on how people can become more financially aware and independent. We particularly liked this list from MSCD. #NationalFinancialAwarenessDay

Love Your Bookshop Day
August is a big month for booksellers, huh? This is definitely a day for independent bookstores to promote their shop with an emphasis on supporting locally owned businesses rather than Amazon. You can promote this day with discounts, recommendations, author appearances and so much more! #LoveYourBookshopDay

AUG 15

National Relaxation Day
National Relaxation Day dovetails nicely with National Wellness Month and brands should use this day to encourage people to take a break and smell the roses. Businesses can promote relaxing products and experiences with discounts and an empathetic tone to those who truly deserve a day to unwind. #NationalRelaxationDay

AUG 16

National Rum Day
Yo ho ho, it’s National Rum Day, and bars and restaurants should offer discounts on any rum-based drinks! Delish has a great list of 20 rum recipes that are perfect for the summer. Consider sharing something similar! #NationalRumDay

National Men’s Grooming Day
Dudes gotta look sharp and today is a day for barbershops and companies offering grooming products to offer discounts and specials! #MensGroomingDay

AUG 17

National Nonprofit Day
Today is a day to recognize the nonprofits that make a huge impact in your community. Any evocation of community involvement from a business inherently humanizes it so consider drawing attention to the nonprofits your business and team support today. Nonprofits themselves can use this day to post mission statements and calls to action to gain new supporters! #NationalNonprofitDay

AUG 18

World Breast Cancer Research Day
This day was founded in 2021 to bring attention to breast cancer and to show appreciation for all of those working on finding a cure. Businesses should consider changing their profile images for a day to the pink ribbon or sharing links to organizations that people can support. You can find more information about how to best post about this day here. #BCCWW

AUG 19

World Photo Day
The backbone of social media is compelling visuals and today is a day to show off some of your businesses’ best photos. The world is your oyster here but if you have amateur photographers on your team then today might be a great day to show off some of their best work! #WorldPhotoDay

National Patient Advocacy Day
The healthcare system is incredibly complicated which can make people feel helpless when they’re already at a low point. Businesses in the medical or legal fields can use this day to promote patient advocacy and provide resources like this one to make sure patients know they still have a voice. #NationalPatientAdvocacyDay

AUG 20

National Bacon Lover’s Day
People seem to love bacon the same way sports fans love their favorite teams. Restaurants should take advantage of this fervor by offering special bacon-related meals and offer discounts! #NationalBaconLoversDay

AUG 21

National Senior Citizens Day
This day was started by Ronald Reagan to raise awareness of issues that affect senior citizens and to promote things that improve their quality of life. It’s that latter part that businesses should focus on by promoting any senior discounts they may have. #NationalSeniorCitizensDay

AUG 22

National Burger Day
MMMM, that IS a tasty burger! You got burgers on your menu? Make them front and center on social media and encourage people to share stories about the best burgers they’ve ever had. Trust us when we say that people remember a phenomenal burger! #NationalBurgerDay

AUG 23

National Cuban Sandwich Day
Cuban sandwiches are muy delicioso so offer discounts to your customers if you have them on your menu! #NationalCubanSandwichDay

National Whiskey Sour Day
Give ‘em something refreshing with a kick on Whiskey Sour Day! Bars and restaurants should offer specials on this drink or consider sharing a recipe for their best whiskey sour like this one here! #NationalWhiskeySourDay

AUG 26

National Dog Day
Cats had their turn earlier in the month and now it’s time for the doggos to take the stage. If you have an office dog then today is the day to show them off! #NationalDogDay

AUG 27

National Just Because Day
This is a day with limitless potential for brands and businesses. It’s based on random acts of kindness so consider using today to surprise your audience with discounts or giveaways! #NationalJustBecauseDay

AUG 28

National Bow Tie Day
August really IS a little languid but that doesn’t mean you can’t dress to the nines with a sweet bow tie. Every office has the person that pledges allegiance to the bow tie so feature them on your social media profiles today! #BowTieDay

AUG 29

National Sports Day
Sporting goods stores should be in competition to see who can post the best deals today and if you have anyone on your team that starred at sports or plays casually on the weekends, then you should highlight them today! #NationalSportsDay

AUG 30

College Colors Day
Encourage your team to wear their college colors to work today, take a photo of the entire team, and then post about your team having school spirit! #CollegeColorsDay

National Grief Awareness Day
This is a day for people in the mental health field to provide insights and advice into how to best cope with loss. Here’s a good example from the APA that you can use as a resource and to raise awareness. #NationalGriefAwarenessDay

AUG 31

Eat Outside Day
Does your restaurant offer outdoor seating with incredible views? Highlight it today on social media! Other options here can be to include discounts on picnic supplies for those people who don’t live in Florida like your Nuera Marketing team! #EatOutsideDay
